Prisoners children

An estimated 310,000 children every year have a parent in prison in England and Wales and 10,000 visits are made by children to our public prisons every week.

These children are at risk of poor outcomes including poverty, isolation and poor mental health. Many children feel stigmatised and fear bullying if they talk to anyone. Children of prisoners are more likely to be in trouble with the law themselves as they grow up.

These children are often left in the shadows, their needs forgotten, and this can have devastating impacts. Despite their situation, they are locked out of the support they need to give them a better chance in life.

It can also be overwhelming for those left caring for children. They might have to work more hours, move house, face stigma and secrecy whilst struggling with anger, hurt, and resentment and trying to decide what is best for their children.
